Remodeling Versus Selling

Should you sell your home, or make do with what you have? Should you consider making a move to a larger place, or contract to have an addition built to your present home? Such decisions are not simple to make, and will require time to consider. Money, time, and the present real estate market will all play roles in whether or not you decide to put your home up for sale, due to age or size. However, one should also note the option of remodeling your present home instead of finding a new one.

Is it better to remodel your present home than try to find a new one? There is no cut and dry answer to that. If it is not imperative to leave your area, but are contemplating a sale to make room for a growing family, perhaps a simple home renovation should be considered as well. Here are just a few reasons why remodeling your current home may be a better investment:

Remodeling may better for your budget. Think about what is involved in selling a home and buying another one. You have to have your home appraised for a good selling price, and maybe you'll hire a Realtor to help with prospective buyers. Meanwhile, you have to look around for a house comparable or cheaper in price than what you are asking. Your house may sell quickly or it may linger, depending on the market. If you are able to sell, though, it may not be as easy to find a house you want. Depending on where you live, a new mortgage may lead you to tighten your belt for a while until you are able to get payments under control.

When you remodel your current home, however, the budget differs and may work to your advantage. Most times, it does not cost as much to renovate a home than buying a new one outright, and most contractors and construction companies offer different ways to finance a home improvement project.

With remodeling, you have control over what you want. So the bathrooms and the kitchen in your present home are outdated. Buying into a new home may give you newer appliances and fixtures, yet you may not immediately find what you want in a new living place. When you consider renovating what you have, however, you are in control of the decor, and not subject to what you are offered elsewhere. Contractors may offer suggestions with regards to fixtures and cabinets, but ultimately when you remodeling you have more freedom in designing the home of your dreams.

Remodeling can improve the value of your home. If you decide not to sell immediately, you can still consider a renovation job and apply that work to a future sale. Updated fixtures, floors, and cabinets are definitely more attractive to a prospective buyer who will not need to hire help to renovate once the papers are signed. Plus, the more improvements are made, the better the asking price.

Whether you decide to sell or renovate, make sure you take all options into consideration. Your home is your place for comfort, and a renovation job can make it more so.

Home Buyer Beware - Who's Watching the Construction of Your Home?

In 2005, over 1.2 million new single family homes were built and sold in the U.S. Thats new houses being built by thousands of large and small contractors. And the number one complaint is that the quality of the work was less than satisfactory.

In fact, if you bring up the word contractor at any cocktail party, everyone has a horror story to tell. If youre having a home built, you start to wonder, Whos watching the construction of my home? Who makes sure its built right?

Most new homeowners I talk to say, Well, isnt the local building inspector taking care of that? Yes, to some extent they make sure the house is built right - but only from a building code standpoint.

Remember that the building codes are minimum standards your builder must follow. For example, the code says that a bathroom exhaust fan must provide a given number of air changes per hour for a given size of bathroom. The code doesnt care how noisy the exhaust fan is.

The codes cover design criteria that are intended to keep your house from failing structurally. Codes also emphasize life safety issues, to protect you if you are not smart enough to know that you shouldnt use your hair dryer in the bathtub.

Its what the building inspector does NOT inspect that you should be concerned about. Rarely do they climb onto your roof to see that the roofing shingles are installed properly to prevent them from blowing off in the first wind storm. I dont recall ever seeing any local code inspector check to see that the tile around your shower has a moisture barrier to prevent mold problems later.

If the building inspector is not watching your house construction, then your builder must take responsibility for the other 10,000 opportunities to build things right (or wrong). Many of the biggest builders in the country have internal inspection systems to ensure their homes are built right, but many do not. Some builders use third-party inspection organizations to check some of the structural items that the code inspector does not check.

Chances are, your new house was not inspected to the extent that you will be satisfied. What can you do?

The number one solution is to educate yourself and dont be afraid to ask questions if it looks like something is not right. One of the easiest ways to do this is to get copies of the installation instructions from the manufacturer of the products being installed on your house. Many are available on the Internet at the manufacturers Web site.

Another way you can protect your investment is to hire an independent inspector to periodically check the work in progress. This can be expensive, but its a bargain compared to what lawyers working on the problems that occur later may have to charge per hour. Check out the inspectors qualifications; some home inspectors may be knowledgeable about new construction but may lack the experience needed to do a thorough examination.

People often hire inspectors after the house is built, just before they close on the sale. Houses must be inspected as they are built. Most inspection people are hired too late in the process, when the most important things are covered up or are difficult to fix.

Ask your builder if he uses an independent inspector. How often and at what milestones does he inspect the home? Are there inspection reports available for you to see?

Homeowner beware: dont assume that your home is being built right. Take control of the outcome by educating yourself about construction practices and making sure your new home gets the quality focus you paid for.

Stunning Motivational Makeover

There is a common saying which says - we become what we think. Can we give a thorough makeover to what we think? Can we transform our negative thoughts to positive ones? Can we sharpen our mental imagery and transform our self-esteem so that it can positively create a mental strength? These days we put a great deal of emphasis on the way we look. Everybody is talking about external makeovers. The television, magazines, radios are all talking about a makeover, a new look that can totally transform your lifestyle. We see individuals receiving makeovers in all types of television shows ranging from talk shows to fashion shows. It is as if a snake is shedding its skin for a new one. The transformation is considered to be drastic. But have you not ever wondered that such transformation is merely an eye-wash that can to a certain extent improve the materiality of our life, but not our inner being? We should not merely focus our attention on looking our best, but rather more importantly focus on feeling well.

It would be interesting if we give our inner being, our soul, our personality a motivational makeover so that it can transform our life permanently for the better. We can start effecting this internal change by using the motivational wallpapers as background to our home and workplace computers. So even while you are busy with our work our senses would be immediately heightened. We need not busy ourselves in motivational readings or motivational exercises. We can have the wallpapers in the background and we will feel energized. These jewels of photography with their words of wisdom can renovate our attitude and outlook to life. They would excite in us new thought processes and new ways of thinking.

Motivational wallpapers contain quotes within a serene and soothing background so as to immediately incite us to a positive action. The background imagery moulds our thought processes, boosts our self-perception and opens up endless vistas of self-exploration. It results in positive energy which gets reflected in our body language, verbal expressions, and our look and in our personality.

These motivational wallpapers are tremendously appealing. It seems always to interact with us in a silence. The nature photographs soothe our senses so that we have tranquil mind and then we can easily reflect on the words of wisdom depicted on them. We can ponder over the thought and how it can positively affect our life. We do not relax in our lethargic complacency; instead we are aroused to positive action. In the modern society we have become so excessively materialistic that we spend a lot of money on make-ups and clothes to have a new look. Instead, if we could just change our thought process, motivate our soul and our psyche we will be able to make our life more enjoyable. The makeover of our outward selves for which we are thus striving would automatically get transformed with a change in our inner being. Thus by using these motivational wallpapers we will be able to bring permanent and lasting changes to our life.

Traditional Feng Shui Rules

Feng Shui has been the rage for a very long time and it has all to do with balance. There are many practitioners all over the world who help people rearrange their homes in the Feng Shui style. The words Feng Shui actually mean wind water and the idea of it is to create balance where there is chaos, and this is all due to energy. In order to balance your home you have to bring together the 5 elements that make up feng shui: earth, fire, water, metal and wood. Each of these will have traditional feng shui rules that govern how they are used, and each has an area of your house that it rules.

In order to tell how your things should be arranged, you need the help of the bagua map that is usually included in any feng shui kit that you can purchase from a new age store. If you hire a practitioner to do this for you, they should also have this of tool.

Here are some of the traditional feng shui rules in no particular order:

  1. Couches, Beds or chairs - As per traditional feng shui rules these should all be arranged so that anyone using them can see the door. This view should be uninterrupted and any headboard should be against a wall.
  2. Shapes -- whether you have thought about it or not, shapes can cause problems in any room if they are not in harmony with the person living there. In the traditional feng shui rules it is said that these bring out certain emotions in us. This is worth checking out and paying attention to so you know which shapes make you feel good.
  3. Colors -- there are a lot of different colors that are used in feng shui but they are not chosen the same as when you are trying to match colors in your house. Instead, per traditional feng shui rules they are used to balance certain areas. Usually colors are based on the yin and yang balance within your home.
  4. Dark Corners -- anything dark in the house like corners where it gets dark or beams that stick out from corners create negative chi in feng shui. It is a good idea to shed a little light in these areas per traditional feng shui rule.
  5. Mirrors -- mirrors are used in traditional feng shui rules to reflect views elsewhere. As an example, you may put a mirror on the outside of your front or back door to make sure that negative energy is reflected away from the house.

Are you ready to transform your home into a zen-like palace of tranquility? It's easier than you think once you get familiar with the traditional feng shui rules. You can learn more right now with 5 more of my favorite feng shui rules for improving your home. Check them out right now by CLICKING HERE!

Basic Wheat Cereal

During the winter months nothing could boast your outlook for the day better than a hot bowl of fresh wheat cereal. Most people today simply do not understand how easy it is to create cereals such as these. This article is intended to inform you how you too can wake up breakfast for yourself and your family.

To begin simmer a full cup of wheat in approximately two cups of water until such time as some of the wheat kernels begin to rupture. In the event that the cooked cereal is a bit on the strong tasting side you can readily discard your cooking water and apply some fresh rinse water to the wheat kernel mixture. To make your wheat mixture more enjoyable you can take your completed wheat cereal and add some sugar or perhaps a little butter to it and really wake up those taste buds. To speed up the preparation process you can soak your wheat kernels in water overnight. In the morning it will take you a mere 40 minutes for the kernels to start bursting open when preparing it upon rising.

If you happen to soak your wheat for several days they will become so soft that you could conceivably eat the wheat without even cooking it. A given quantity of wheat seeds will expand to approximately double what its original volume was after it has absorbed the soaking water. Keep this well in mind and be careful about soaking your wheat too long.

An important thing to remember is that some research that has been conducted has shown that individuals who had eaten wheat for several days straight have ended up with a very bad case of loose bowels. You have been properly warned now. I should in all fairness explain also that this same series of tests has also demonstrated that cracking the wheat into very small pieces prior to boiling it tended to rid the experimenter's body of this problem. You don't need a lot of fancy equipment to crack wheat - all you really require is a pepper mill. Even plan ordinary stones can be employed in the process of cracking wheat when necessary.

Good luck and bon apptit!

Thriving in a Feng Shui Kitchen

Kitchens represent the health and wellness of a family. It's where you are nourished through the food prepared there and through the nurturing of family connections. According to Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese philosophy of creating balance to improve wellbeing, the kitchen also represents a family's prosperity. The Chinese relate the nourishing power of the stove to the ability of family members to earn money. So, it's not far off to say that it's probably the most important room in a house.

Maximize the Energy Flow
Since kitchens have predominantly angular lines (from cabinetry to appliances) bringing in softer shapes and textures help to create balance. A round kitchen table creates more harmonious family interactions and allows the ch'i (or energy) to flow more freely throughout the room. Curtains, area rugs, and other fabric also add softness to the space.

Avoid Rushing and Stagnant Ch'i
Rushing ch'i occurs when the kitchen door and back door are aligned. If possible, move furniture or a large object, such as a plant, to force the ch'i to flow around the room. Stagnant ch'i - even more detrimental to a kitchen - occurs in dark corners and areas with dirt, piles of clutter, and stale odors. Fix these areas to keep the energy flowing in your family.

Maintain Cleanliness
For obvious reasons, it is important to keep your kitchen clean. Leftover food, crumbs and dirty dishes attract bugs, while spills can create a physical hazard. However, on a symbolic level, the dirt is attracting poor health and finances. So keeping your kitchen clean has a greater impact than you would think.

Incorporate the Color Green
Plants bring the message of vitality and life to a kitchen. Also consider incorporating the color green, as green - representing Wood energy - complements the Fire and Water elements, which are present in a kitchen.

Whatever you can do to improve the Feng Shui of your kitchen, the more your family will benefit in all areas of life.

Following Old Religious Text - Religion

Most people tend to bury their head in the sand when it comes to problems with their family, community, job, government and of course religious beliefs. They don't want to hear the truth and often they can't see the truth. I have read many religious text, books and other literature, missing some very important parts and only when I reread the information, did I find what I have missed. Sometimes I have needed to read or listen to the same information over 30 times, before it becomes somewhat clear to me.

Most religions are living in the dark ages. From what I gather, Hinduism is over 4000 years old, Judaism is around 2500 years old, Christianity is 2000 years old and Islam is about 1400 years old. People are following information today that isn't necessarily applicable to modern times but often religious leaders can twist it around, add some verbiage, make a semi-educated judgment and now we have something we can follow. It just doesn't make sense.

Why do we put so much faith in religious books like the Bible, Torah, Bhagavad-Gita and Quran, when these books cannot be proven and often have many mistakes and errors. I know people that open these books very carefully and treat them like they are made from solid gold. They are books like any others but often people live their lives from the information inside, strictly and religiously. Often never straying from their beliefs, even though they're outdated and hard to follow.

Let me get to the bottom line here, have you researched your religion and if you have, do you have any questions that can't be answered? Do you read any of the religious text and often wonder or think to yourself, this doesn't seem to make sense, because you just read something else that was contradicting the last statement.

You can handle the truth about your religion. By reading this article, it tells me that you're on the Internet, can you go to a search engine and type in Bible contradictions, Torah contradictions, or whatever your beliefs are. I was searching for errors in the Bible and came upon a couple of pretty good web sites.

Use words like contradiction, problems, errors and see what websites you come up with.

Seek the wisdom and the truth shall set you free.

Spoiled Children

The Heretic's Daughter - Religion, Fear and the Salem Witch Trials

The Heretic's Daughter is author Kathleen Kent's first novel, and it is a stunning debut. It takes place in and around Salem, Massachusetts during the 1690's, before and during the infamous Salem witch trials. The narrator's mother, Martha Carrier, is based on the real woman of the same name, who was one of the first woman to be tried and hung in the trials. Ms. Kent is herself a tenth generation descendant of Martha Carrier.

Ms. Kent has done her research, and she does a beautiful job of depicting the harsh realities of life during this time. While the initial Puritan settlers had come to this land to escape persecution, and hoped to found a new religious community, they were besieged by plagues, crop failures, and attacks by indigenous tribes. The child mortality rate was so high, we are told in the first pages, "that some families did not name their child until the child was past twelve months and more likely to live. And in many households if a baby died, that same baby's name would be passed on to the next born. And to the very next if that babe died as well."

This is from the novel's narrator, Sarah Carrier, Martha Carrier's daughter. If Sarah sometimes seems distant and unfeeling as she describes horrific events, it is no wonder, based on the climate in which she was raised. In fact, Sarah's voice and attitude was at first a put-off to me, making her difficult to relate to or feel for. But as the novel progresses, her voice becomes one of the book's greatest strengths, because it provides such a vast contrast to our emotion-laden, Oprah-fueled times. Sarah helps us to see what a stark and difficult existence does to people, and as she does mature - through watching her mother's trial and surviving her own incarceration - her growth and new-found wisdom is that much more evident.

As the novel begins, Sarah and her family are on their way to live with her grandmother, and, unbeknown to them, are bringing smallpox with them to their new community. This fact, along with Martha Carrier's headstrong and outspoken nature, will ultimately lead to the family becoming a target when the terrible accusations begin. Those accusations, as presented in The Heretic's Daughter, gain traction in the community because of the lethal combination of fear and damnation-based religion. The community, facing so many challenges to its existence, cannot fathom why they are being targeted by God for such wrath. Surely there must be some offense, some sin, that they are being punished for? In their desperation, they seek out the 'sinners' amongst them, literally demonizing their own neighbors for the smallest of offenses. They seek to scapegoat and purge - as so many have done in the name of religion throughout history.

From there, the paralysis of fear takes over, with each new charge silencing more people within the community, all seeking to protect their own lives and families. Children as young as four are taken into custody - since the 'devil' is behind it all, and can take over anyone's mind, no one is considered innocent. Quite the contrary, during the trials the defendants are most definitely considered guilty until proven innocent. And their innocence is in the hands of several hysterical, adolescent girls no less (I'll let you read the book to learn more about this.)

One of the most touching aspects of the book is how Martha gets Sarah to save herself, helping Sarah to realize that behind her mother's stern exterior lies the greatest of maternal loves. While Sarah at first despises her mother's difficult personality, wishing she would just capitulate to others, she comes to realize her mother's seeming obstinance is actually born of tremendous faith and wisdom. This is exactly the opposite of what her community elders teach - that strict obedience is the foundation for faith. As Sarah observes, that obedience, along with fear, is what allows the madness to continue for so long.

And so The Heretic's Daughter works on at least three levels. First, as a gripping historical novel that masterfully depicts a certain setting and time period. Second, as a personal story of a mother and adolescent daughter struggling to understand each other. And third, as a cautionary tale about how religion can be twisted when a society is ruled by fear.

Weight Loss Spells For Those Interested in Witchcraft and Magick

Weight loss spells are becoming more and more popular. Both female and male witches alike often cast weight loss spells with hopes of obtaining their "dream bodies." A weight loss spell falls into the same category of "beauty spells" and "glamor spells." But do they really work?

Weight loss spells don't just magically work in the sense that they *poof!* make the witch thinner, but they can help the witch become more motivated to work out and to eat healthier. In order to lose weight, healthy eating and working out are always the most important things to do. But neither can be done if the witch has no willpower. Thankfully, a weight loss spell can help with that.

If you're interested in witchcraft and weight loss, here is a spell you can try:

Every Friday night for a month, light some white and pink candles (or red if you're a male witch or mage. I won't make you light pink ones.) Drink at least one full cup of water before, during, and after the spell. Have some jasmine incense burning as well, if you're not allergic to it. During the spell, while drinking the water, look in front of a full length mirror and visualize yourself shrinking and becoming thinner. Try imagining that you actually FEEL yourself getting thinner. Spend a few minutes doing this while saying this mantra:

"Extra weight go away, Venus be with me this day. Give me the strength, give me the power. I shall lose weight starting this hour."

Say this over and over again while visualizing yourself getting thinner.

After the weight loss spell is over, snuff the candles out and then set them in a private place until the next Friday. You may resume where you left off every Friday night until you begin noticing differences in your eating habits. Don't forget to thank Venus often.

Can You Tell the Difference Between Evil Profits and Good Profits?

I was reading through an article the other day about the Wiccan religion and they were very upset about a comment that the Christian website owner had made. I would like you to read the response from the Christians first.

"I was watching a police show on television some time ago, and saw a sting operation in which undercover police officers bought drugs from dealers on the street. Invariably, some of the dealers would ask, "You a cop?" The officer would say "no," and the deal was made. Satan often goes undercover. The Bible tells us that he can even masquerade as an angel of light. Just because a certain religion professes no belief in Satan, does not mean its adherents are not falling for his lies. It just means that they're unaware that they are. You said God would be disgusted by our judgmentalism. God has told us in His Word (The Bible) to watch for false prophets and false apostles. God has told us to contend for the faith. He has told us to evangelize. In other words, God has told us to do just what we are doing."

Here's something I would like you to think about if you consider yourself a Christian, read this very carefully.

"God has told us in his Word the Bible to watch for false prophets and false apostles." I would like you to read this statement a couple of times and see if you agree with it. How can you possibly tell who the false prophets are? Do you think that because you are a Christian and believe in Jesus or God, that you will know the difference between a evil profit and a godly one?

I often write articles and have written quite a few of them about religion and Christianity. Seems to be the one that I know the most about, so it gets the most attention from me. If I was to make a statement like the Bible has contradictions in it, would you consider me an evil profit. Someone working for the Devil. I don't think so, because it doesn't make sense, how could you turn a truth full statement into evil prophesies.

If I was to introduce you to a hundred people, could you tell me by looking at them or talking to them, which ones are evil and which ones are good. Most Christians would probably respond to that with, God knows and that's good enough for me. Everyone else who talks bad about Christianity will be considered evil or searching for the truth. They just haven't found Jesus yet, is that right, is that what you believe.

I found this response to the Wiccan believer to be one that I run into often. It seems unfair to others who aren't Christians and one-sided. Most organized religions have answers for everything, the problem is that some of the times these answers don't make any sense at all. If you're going to follow this part of the Bible word for word, shouldn't you follow all of the Bible word for word.

Leviticus 14:9 On the seventh day he must shave off all his hair; he must shave his head, his beard, his eyebrows and the rest of his hair. He must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water, and he will be clean.

Leviticus 19:27 " 'Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.

This will make Christians easier to spot, a bald head with long beards.

The Importance of Women's Spirituality

A friend recently asked me why I felt it was so important to focus specifically on spirituality for women. Isn't the point of spirituality, she asked, to move to an understanding that transcends distinctions like gender? Does it really serve the process, she wondered, to imply there is a separate spirituality for men and for women?

As part of my response, I referred her to a recently published book called Taking Back God: American Women Rising Up for Religious Equality. The author, Leora Tanenbaum, explores the role of women within Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The author interweaves religious history with interviews of contemporary women who care deeply about their religions, and derive great knowledge and sustenance from them, but are unhappy with the restricted roles of women within them. Many of these interviews are very moving, because these women have really struggled with this issue.

One of the biggest problems for these women is the restrictions placed on their access to teachings and official roles. Many of their religions restrict women's rights or abilities to read certain scriptures, or to teach or preach. Since scriptures are often considered the word of God, or a conduit to enlightenment (in the East), this sends the message that women are 'further' from God or enlightenment, and that they don't have the right to communicate directly, or to learn, teach, or preach on their own. They have to get everything secondhand. Contemporary American women don't accept this in the office, and are increasingly uncomfortable with it in their houses of worship.

While Taking Back God focuses on the official role of women in Christianity, Judaism and Islam, things aren't altogether different in the New Age or self-help communities, or in many Buddhist or Yoga centers. Although there are more women spiritual teachers, authors, and religious leaders in America than elsewhere in the world, they are still vastly outnumbered by men (just check out the Amazon bestsellers list). This despite the fact that according to book marketing surveys, women outnumber men as the purchasers of spiritual and religious books by as much as 4 to 1. In other words, women would appear to be more interested in spirituality in general, but the majority of books, teachers, organizations and resources out there are male-dominated. What is the message sent by this?

So, my answer to my friend, the reason focusing on women's spirituality is important to me, even though I am wary of over-identifying with gender issues, is that I think it really matters how many women religious leaders and spiritual teachers there are out there. And I think full access to scriptures, and leadership roles, and teaching positions - within every tradition - is imperative. Women's access to spirituality, their relationship with God/Tao/Nirvana/Brahma (or whatever you believe in), can't be secondhand. In a way, changing this is the most essential form of change that can occur, because our spiritual and religious beliefs define our organizational view of the world. If we see women as 'lower down' the totem pole, even subconsciously, we are denying ourselves our full power.

How to Avoid Conflict With Friends and Family, Or Anyone

Genesis 13:8. Abraham in Bible provides a great example of how to avoid conflict when dealing with friends and family. In Genesis 13 Abram and Lot had left Egypt and they had settled between Bethel and Hai. After a while, strife developed between Abram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen because there was not enough land to support both herds of cattle. When Abram became aware of the strife, he immediately addressed this issue with Lot to avoid anymore conflict (Genesis 13:8, "And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.").

In Genesis 13:9 Abram tells Lot "Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left." The manner that Abram presented his plan and the plan itself stopped strife immediately and avoided strife in the future. The steps Abram used to avoid conflict with Lot can be used by anyone to avoid conflict with friends, family, or anyone.

Conflict Avoidance Steps.

1. Identify A Reasonable Solution to Resolve the Dispute. In the dispute between Abram and Lot, Abram identified that the close proximity of the herds was creating strife. They needed to spread out the herds.

2. Have One of the Disputing Parties Identify Fair Options That Would Be Satisfactory to Both Parties. Here Abram identified two choices (one goes to the left, the other one goes to the right) that he thought would be fair options for both Lot and himself.

3. Let the Other Party Choose Which Option. In the case of the dispute between Abram and Lot, Abram let Lot choose between the two options (one goes to the left, the other one goes to the right).

This is a wonderful way to avoid conflict: have one party divide the object of contention into two satisfactory options, and then let the other party choose which option.

GENESIS 13 BIBLE SCRIPTURE Genesis 13:8, "And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren."

What Are Cooling Towers?

What exactly are cooling towers anyway? They are heat rejection devices used to extract waste heat into the air from the cooling of a water stream to a lesser temperature. They are also referred to evaporate heat rejection devices. These devices provide lower water temperatures than an air cooled or heat rejection devices.

Cooling towers are used in air conditioning, electric power generation and in various manufacturing facilities. They can be referred to both open circuit and closed circuit heat rejection equipment.

Small cooling towers are designed to handle only a few gallons of water per minute, which is supplied by small pipes. The large towers cool hundreds of thousands of gallons of water per minute. The pipes supplying the water are up to fifteen feet in diameter. These are found in large power plants.

There are several different types of cooling towers. One such type is the mechanical-draft cooling towers. They rely on power driven fans that draw or force the air through the specific tower.

Another type of cooling tower is the natural draft-cooling tower. It uses buoyancy of exhaust air rising in a chimney to provide the needed draft for cooling. Another type is the fan-assisted natural draft tower uses a mechanical draft to expand the buoyancy.

In the past, they relied on the prevailing winds to get the air drafts needed for cooling.

Cooling towers can emit a lot of noise. Things that cause the noise include the sound of water falling, the sound of large fans along with motors and drive belts as well.

Many terms are associated with water coolers. We will briefly go over a few of them. Leaching refers a loss of wood preservative chemicals caused by the washing action of flowing water through a wooden cooling tower. A plume is a stream of exhaust leaving the tower.

Blowouts are water droplets that are blown out of the cooling towers with the exhaust air that is blown out.

Alter Your Home - Energy Consumption and Energy-Efficiency

An environmentally-sound home is one that makes less of an impact on the environment. This example of home can include adding things like energy-efficient appliances or low-e windows to make your home more efficient or maybe even adding more substantial items like solar power or a water recycling system. If you are making these modifications now, the neat thing is that many of the products cost less now than in the past. If your home is in the process of being built, you can elect to have the home constructed to take maximum advantage of the natural illumination of the home. Making a home more efficient or purchasing an eco-friendly home will not only save you costs on things like utility bills, but is also the environmentally responsible decision to make.

Solar derived energy is a relatively new idea. Nonetheless, as a contemporary homeowner you can take advantage of the technology that is presented and get the energy that you need for your home. The way that solar energy is employed is that solar panels are situated in a place where they can get plenty of sunlight. These large panels are constructed of glass and have tubes with water coursing through them. As the sun heats the water in the tubes, it is transformed into energy that you can use for your home. An added benefit is that the hot water can then be used instead of a hot water heater. Most homeowners place the panels up on the portion of the roof that gets the greatest amount of sunlight. That means that shade from plant life needs to be minimized anywhere the panels are installed. Each system is different, but it is possible to derived energy an entire home using solar panels.

Water is a limited resource, so everyone needs to do their part to use less water. One method of making your water usage more eco-friendly is to have reservoir tanks where you can collect water and then send it through a filtration system where it can then furnish the water needs of your home. This water recycling method is a great method to take care of your yard's water needs.

Recycling water can conserve about eighty percent of the overall water used in many homes. Another easy way to cut back on the quantity of water that you are using is to put in a low-flow showerhead. A low-flow showerhead is not complicated to install and will save hundreds of gallons of water yearly. Also, if you have antiquated toilets, upgrading to a newer toilet can also cut back on your water usage for the future. When you start to think about the many ways that you can save water, you can perhaps come up with even more.

Eco-friendly homes are the trend of the future. Discovering ways to cut down on each household's use of electricity and water is important for all of us. You can make modifications to make your home more earth-friendly that will really make an impact. Recycling, utilizing solar power and monitoring your water use are all great ways to start making your home a green home.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Power

Solar power is starting to go main stream. While this technology has been around for some time, many people are just starting to learn about alternative fuels such as these. They have been getting a lot of buzz because of high oil costs. The inability to afford rising fuel costs, have forced some individuals to think of new ways to run their homes. One way is to use energy from the sun. There are advantages and disadvantages of solar power. Let's discuss the advantages first.

There are many well noted benefits of sun energy. The ones that are most often discussed include cheaper energy costs, clean fuel and less dependence on oil.

In recent years, utility bills have gone through the roof in many parts of the world. Oil prices are skyrocketing and global supplies are diminishing. This trend is not going to cease worsening. Some people have been unable to pay their bills, while others have had to cut back drastically in other areas of their life affecting their lifestyles to a great measure. There have been many families who have had to go without heat simply because they could not come up with the money to pay their utility bills. Because the sun is a free fuel source, it is now possible for us to cut back on costs.

Sun energy is also good for the planet. It does not emit any harmful gases. It also makes people who use it less dependent on oil. Their monetary outlays are also not dependent on oil prices.

As noted earlier, there are advantages and disadvantages of solar power. We have already discussed the advantages, now let's discuss the disadvantages.

The biggest disadvantage of tapping on sunlight as a fuel source is the high cost of purchasing the panels and then having them installed. Thankfully, there are online guides that will give step-by-step instructions to build and install your own. For around $200 worth of materials, you can do everything yourself.

As you can see, there are both advantages and disadvantages of solar power. Sun power can replace oil based fuel. As a result, an individual can save money and do something good for the environment. The main disadvantage of using sunlight to provide energy is that it can be costly if you pay someone to install such a system for you. However, you can save a ton of money if you create and install the solar panels yourself.

Radiant Heat - New Construction

Radian heat has become very popular in today's new home construction in cold climates. Once again I'm going to share some of my experience with my own house and others that we have recently built for customers. Radiant heat offers both energy savings along with comforts for home owners.

There are many different types of radiant heat systems on the market today but I will only discuss one of them that I'm quite familiar with. The new homes that we build with radiant heat utilize one of three boiler types; high efficiency gas boiler by Weil McLain, direct vent oil boiler by Buderus, or a high efficiency gas on demand boiler by Rinnai. Each of these boiler systems provide a high efficiency option for our customers depending on their choice of fuel and preferences.

The system is quite simple, the basement slabs have PEX tubing looped throughout the slab and tied to the reinforcing steel. Each loop runs back to a manifold and hot water from the boiler is pumped through the tubing to heat up the slab and "radiate" throughout the space. The main floor of the house is heated by running rubber or PEX tubing between the joists and stapled to the bottom side of the floor sheathing. Each of these loops is again run to another manifold which allows warm water to be pumped through the tubes thus warming the floor and causing it to "radiate" heat to the floor above.

In my new house we even ran tubing to the second floor for each of the bathrooms so we have nice warm tile to stand on. Radiant works well with concrete slabs, tile floors and engineered wood floors. You should check with the manufacturer of any flooring material prior to installation to make sure it is compatible with radiant heat.

Radiant heat produces a much more even temperature and an incredible warm feeling on your feet. By producing the steady even temperature the system actually will use less energy trying to overcome the up and down swings of a traditional heating system. Many statistics suggest that radiant heat can be as much as 20% cheaper to run than traditional heat systems. On average my experience has shown that the radiant heat system will cost approximately 20% to 30% more to purchase and install. However, the comfort alone is well worth the price and over time it should easily pay for itself.

Wirsbo has some great information about radiant heat at their web site. If you're interested in more information about the details we typically use in our homes see my website at http://homeconstructionimprovement.blogspot.com

How To Win Friends
Powerful Life Changing Thoughts

Why Your Refrigerator is Making Weird Noises

Are the sounds or noises from your new refrigerator driving you mad? Does your new refrigerator sound loud, noisy, weird, unusual, crazy, funny, or about to break? Then read on.

If you hear an unusual sound try to isolate the source. This alone may lead you to the culprit. It may also lead you to the realization that it is simply an idiosyncrasy of modern refrigeration systems.

Modern refrigerators can make a wide variety of unusual sounds. This is a result of both the new ozone friendly refrigerant being used, plus the complexity of some refrigerators.

The following are some sounds your refrigerator may be producing:

Ice Cracking -----

Probably ice being produced by the icemaker. Or the heating elements in the defrost system may be removing the ice buildup off the cooling coils.

Ice Cracking 2 -----

If you have an ice storage bucket you may be hearing the ice cracking or snapping as it expands. Primarily heard during the summer, and shortly after the freezer door has been opened. Warm air invaded the ice bucket and caused some of the ice cubes to crack or expand.

Water Running -----

Probably hearing the icemaker filling. Usually heard every four to six hours.

Water Bubbling -----

Some times described as the sound of a fountain. Primarily heard on refrigerators with a water dispenser. May be the water storage bladder inside the refrigerator section. Usually hidden behind a crisper or shelf. It pre-cools a small amount (one or two glasses) of water so the water dispensed is not warm. Could be caused by an air bubble within the bladder, or the sudden warming of the bladder itself. Sudden warming can cause the water to expand. Sometimes heard when standing with the refrigerator section door open for few minutes.

Water Dripping -----

The defrost system may be operating. If accompanied by hissing, youre hearing water hitting the defrosting elements. Water dripping sound often heard as the result of water flowing off the cooling coils during defrost, and down the drain tubing. Sometimes accompanied by a gurgling noise. These sounds are normal.

Gurgling --------------

Primarily the sound of refrigerant evaporating (boiling) as it enters the cooling coils. Usually heard just after the refrigerator starts or stops. This is a normal sound for modern refrigerators. In extreme cases may require the addition of a sound-adsorbing pad.

Whistling -------------

Air moves around the interior of many refrigerators even when the refrigerator appears to be off. The air is being moved from a cold area to a warmer area. This eliminates the need to start the compressor simply because one area needs more cooling.

Whirring --------------

Associated with the redistribution of cold air within the refrigerator. It is probably the door to an air chute being opened to allow air to pass through. Often described as a whirring or ticking noise, it is the sound produced by a small electrical motor used to open the damper.

Air Blowing ---------

As described above the fan has been turned on even though the refrigerator compressor is still off. The air heard is the fan motor moving air to another area. Often heard within the freezer section. Air noises are also more prevalent because fan motors are quieter. Air noise accompanied by a fan running sounds normal. An air noise by itself sounds weird.

Once you have isolated the source of the sound you can then decide whether you require service. Generally, the answer is, no. Consumers simply want to be assured that the noise is normal. Or at least that it not about to break down.

Modern refrigerators have become very complex. With this complexity have come some unusual sounds. But in the end you are the person who will be living with this refrigerator for the next ten years. It's your decision.

Is Boiler Replacement Or Repair More Energy Efficient?

The majority of UK homeowners aim to run an energy efficient home. After all, it can save you time, money and improve the environment. The government has started to focus on energy efficiency as well. Building Regulations now include set standards that all hot water and heating systems must meet. A hurting economy and ever-increasing prices adds further pressure. Now, more homeowners than ever are having trouble paying the bills.

Climate change is making energy efficiency even more important. With the number of natural disasters attributed to climate change increasing, the public is beginning to take notice. Homeowners often wonder what they can do to improve the current situation. There are a number of simple adjustments that can be made to make your home as energy efficient as possible. Ensuring that the home has high-efficiency heating and hot water systems is a good first step. The consumer should be aware of the many options available to them.

High efficiency condensing technology can prove extremely worthwhile. When faced with the decision to replace or repair their boiler, consumers are often unsure of what to do. They should be supplied all the facts so that they can make the choice that is best for their home. It is common for the homeowner to depend on the installer to provide guidance. Therefore, the installer plays quite a large part in this whole process.

The high price of boilers and the required installation forces many consumers to choose repair over replacement. This poor decision can lead to future problems. While it is true that repairs lengthen the life of a boiler, they cannot improve its level of efficiency. A faulty appliance will only end up costing more in the end. The price of repair and the cost of running older boilers is often much higher than the cost of complete system replacement.

If costs don't persuade you then, maybe the impact your choice has on the environment will. Homes in the United Kingdom are responsible for 21% of all carbon dioxide produced. Heating and hot water systems make up 80% of that number. Energy efficiency lowers bills in addition to helping the UK attain its goal of decreasing carbon emissions by 2010. Heating and hot water makes up well over half the cost of a typical fuel bill. High efficiency boilers can cut bills by up to 30% and save the typical home 200 a year.

There are a number of UK companies the produce heating and hot water systems of various makes and models. Important features to look for include cast aluminium-silicon heat exchanger, brass waterset, efficient pump, and a concealed system connection that increases system performance. Installation can be made quick and easy with models that contain a centrally located telescopic flue kit with preformed connections and pre-fitted mains electrical lead. Drop-down controls and spacious interiors make servicing the system easy. Radio frequency, RF, controller versions and a variety of warranty plans are available for the consumer.

Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) - Savings, Security, Soundproofing

What are Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF)?

ICF forms are varied, from sheets with spacers to what I like to call "Legos on Steroids". ICFs employ a foam-based panel or block with a hollow core. The core is often reinforced with steel. Cement is then poured into the hollow portion and left to cure. Once curing is complete, the foam is left in place. The foam and concrete together provide insulation, increased protection from fire and storms, a backing for interior walls and exterior siding or brick, and energy efficiency.

Why all of the buzz about ICF homes?

Homes made with Insulated Concrete Forms are becoming more popular for a number of reasons. Three areas of benefit for ICF homes are:

* SAVINGS

* SECURITY

* SOUNDPROOFING

SAVINGS:

With energy savings of 25-80% claimed with these insulated concrete form systems, they are definitely worth giving a closer look.

An ICF home may cost a bit more initially (estimates range from 0 - 7%), but monthly savings on your energy bill will last for as long as you live in your home. Since insulation will not be necessary in addition to the ICF on exterior walls, your insulation budget can be trimmed considerably. Lower insurance premiums are also possible because of the safety features of such a structure.

SECURITY:

Traditional construction is no match for the safety features built into an ICF home. Besides providing energy savings, the lower infiltration of outdoor air keeps allergens outside. ICFs offer increased safety during tornadoes, hurricanes, seismic activity, and high winds. They are also moisture resistant and less inviting to insect pests.

SOUNDPROOFING:

We like to think of our homes as our sanctuaries. Noise pollution can quickly erase our sense of peace, and noise levels at home are no exception. The foam and cement in ICF built homes provide both thermal and acoustical insulation. This can cut down on noise even between levels of the home. Some people claim that they hear no traffic noise from inside the house, and that even jets flying overhead are not disturbing. How does a quiet haven sound after a long day's work?

ICF homes may be considered to be SUSTAINABLE as well. They are constructed to endure for many, many years. In addition, numerous companies claim that their foam product is made from recycled materials. Green home building has embraced these energy-efficient dwellings. ICF homes may be increasingly touted as an environmentally-friendly answer to the increased use and cost of fossil fuels.

Home Solar Solutions - Reduce Home Electricity Bills With Solar Energy

Home solar solutions have the potential to generate clean, renewable electricity for home owners. By using solar energy, we can reduce our home utility bills for many years to come. Apart from our bank mortgage, electricity cost is one of the largest expenses in our household. Although solar technology is complex, the renewable power systems are simple to install and maintain. How does the technology work? This article will provide some information on the application of solar power at home.

A home solar system in general uses solar array to capture the sun energy. A solar array is made from numerous solar cells soldered together in series. Solar cell or Photovoltaic (PV) is made from semiconductor material and has the potential to generate electric current the exposed to sun light. For optimum results, solar arrays are usually fixed on rooftops. To convert the sun energy to usable electric power, the array is connected to batteries bank through a charge controller. The charge controller will regulate the batteries charging process and also prevents any current from flowing back to the array. Since a battery can only store Direct Current (DC), an inverter is used to change the DC to Alternate Current (AC). All of our home electrical appliances run on AC.

Home solar solutions are the fastest grown renewable energy for residential usage. Many people are concern about the rising cost of energy. One of the steps we can take to shield ourselves from expensive energy bills is to implement solar technology at our homes.

Want to know how you can build your own Home Solar Panels to reduce your electricity bill for under $300? If you are good with hand tools, start a Do It Yourself (DIY) project to construct a residential solar array to harness free energy from the sun. Builders Using Green Building Techniques in New Homes

More and more NH builders are using energy saving building techniques in Southern New Hampshire., offering some of the latest technology in heating and cooling homes. The term green construction is becoming more common as energy costs soar across the nation.

There has been a lot of interest in Geothermal technology which takes advantage of the relatively stable temperature of the earth to help heat and cool your home. A series of pipes, called a loop, is installed underground. A water solution is circulated through this loop where it picks up heat from the earth. This heat is brought back to a heat pump in the home and from there it is circulated through duct work to heat your home. In the summer months this process is reversed so that heat is extracted from the home and deposited back into the earth. According to the PSNH website, actual operating costs average 48 cents per square foot per year for heat, hot water, and A/C. Even though the systems are costly, the advantages are obviously reduced operating costs, lower maintenance, its cleaner than burning oil, wood, gas or coal and you should look into Energystar and power company incentives.

Other energy savings and eco friendly techniques that are embraced in New Hampshire are solar and passive solar technologies. There are simple and subtle changes that can be made with new construction, without installing solar panels, such as orienting the house to be facing South and installing lots of insulated triple pane glass; we see sunrooms with tile floors that open up to main living spaces, separated by doors to cut down heat loss at night, but open them up and let the sunshine and warmth flood in during the day. Builders and property owners have not embraced wind technology in NH at this point.

With the high price of energy and New Hampshire's cold Winter climate, alternative energy sources are becoming more and more popular. This year we have seen a resurgence of "clean coal" that is marketed as washed and is not the messy dusty coal of the past. It is marketed with clean burning coal stoves.

Tax Credits are Still Available

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 extended tax credits for energy efficient home improvements (windows, doors, roofs, insulation, HVAC, and non-solar water heaters). Tax credits for these residential products, which had expired at the end of 2007, will now be available for improvements made during 2009. However, improvements made during 2008 are not eligible for a tax credit. The bill also extended tax credits for solar energy systems, wind energy and fuel cells to 2016. New tax credits were established for small wind energy systems and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Tax credits for builders of new energy efficient homes and tax deductions for owners and designers of energy efficient commercial buildings were also extended. We suggest you research these credits to be sure they apply to your project, prior to getting started.

If you are looking for a new home incorporating the latest energy saving construction techniques, NH new homes we have projects currently in Milford, Merrimack and Mont Vernon and expect to offer more in neighboring communities as well in the near future.

Unfortunately, these fossil fuels are limited and the Earth will soon run out of them if we do not find alternatives soon.

1. Why We Need to Start Considering Alternative Energy Production Seriously Now

It is estimated that the remaining amounts of coal in America can still last for 200 more years or so. We need to start researching alternatives and consider what will happen to our future generations if we continue to be ignorant about this problem.

As the demand for resources like coal, oil and natural gas are increasing every day due to the growth in China and India, it is possible that these resources may run out much faster than we expect. The best way to solve this problem is through alternative energy production solutions.

2. Alternative Energy Production

More countries are investing more money to researching alternative energy solutions. In fact, some households are already able to build their own homemade systems to generate free electricity on a small scale to run their own house. This is entirely possible as I have succeeded in doing so as well and am enjoying the benefits of creating free electric power. These alternative power sources are very clean and will never run out.

3. Which Are the Best Alternative Energy Solutions for Running a Home?

The 2 best methods would be to build solar panels to harness the sunlight energy and also by building wind turbines that can harness free wind power.

How to Save on Energy Costs by Utilizing a Basic Law of Physics

It is no news that everyone nowadays is looking for every possible way possible to cut down on energy costs. Not only is this good for your wallet, it is also good for the environment. Energy efficiency is at the top of the list of priorities even for major governmental agencies and large corporations worldwide. Closer to home, energy costs reductions can help every family in being able to save on energy bills and spend those savings either elsewhere or simply put away for a rainy day. Some of the energy saving methods require significant investment up front or a major change in operating style. For example, buying a hybrid gasoline-electric car in place of a standard gasoline powered vehicle may help in cutting down on energy costs, but there is an upfront cost of upgrading to hybrid vehicles which are usually higher in price than their gasoline counterparts.

Looking at ways to save on energy without such significant initial capital expenditures, one simply needs to refresh one of the basic laws of physics. Taught in almost every high school physics class everywhere, this law has to do with reflection and absorption of light and heat. This law states that lighter colors reflect light and darker colors absorb light. By the same token, lighter colors reflect heat and darker colors absorb heat. This can now be put into practice with the goal of saving energy. Here are a few examples that follow in the next paragraph.

If you live in an area with hot climate conditions, such as Arizona or New Mexico, then choosing lighter colors for the exterior of your car is preferable, whereas if you live in a generally cold area such as New England or Canada, choosing a darker colored car is preferable. In the former, the car will reflect as much heat as possible, reducing your air conditioning energy usage and in the latter it will absorb as much heat as possible reducing your heating energy usage. Following the same principle, choosing a lighter color for the siding of your house if you live in a hot climate such as Florida is preferable whereas a darker shade is preferable if you live in northern latitudes. In the former case, sunlight and heat will be reflected reducing air conditioning bills and in the latter, heat will be absorbed, reducing heating bills.

Of course in the case of homes, insulation levels and such also play a role, but we are discussing this here assuming all other variables are eliminated. Similarly, the choice of colors can be extended to the clothing that you wear also. The colors of paint that you use in the interior of your home need to be chosen wisely also. Using dark colors reduces the amount of light reflected and therefore you may need to use more light bulbs to get the same effect as opposed to using lighter shades of colors and using as much reflection as possible. This will reduce the energy costs associated with lighting. Hence by proper choice of colors and utilizing the law of absorption and reflection of heat, one can save on energy costs without making significant changes in lifestyle.
